1 ½ lbs. smoked sausage; chopped and browned

A pinch of salt and black pepper
1 ½ cups grits
1 ½ tsp. thyme; chopped.
1/4 tsp. garlic powder
4 ½ cups water
16 oz. cheddar cheese; shredded
1 cup milk
